“Old legends tell of a Circle of Faefolk who would watch over children from less than perfect homes.  Slaves, street urchins, or otherwise mistreated youth would often gain a silent protector in the form of a Sprite sent to watch over them; or at least the ones showing a potential for magic.  For these special few, the Sprite would teach them defensive spells that the children could use to protect themselves from their abusers until they were ready to escape their early homes. When a child began their exodus, the Sprite gifted them a mask that permits safe passage to the Realm of Faefolk so they will always have a home to return to.”
